This is the sentiment that has to be examined inwardly IMO. Personally, I don't feel anyone owns a stock they feel like will underperform, that just isn't likely, why would you exactly? Same thing with inherited stock from Grandma, they don't hold it as an heirloom if it's AT&T. If it's Amazon, then yes. More likely, the rationale of stating you expect it to underperform is to tell yourself and others so that you mitigate the internal/external blow back when it inevitably underperforms, or in Disney's case, significantly underperforms (last 3 years), but the expectation is for it to surge.I have a bias towards these companies but don’t necessarily think they will outperform. One of them is Disney - I like Disney and I like owning Disney stock.
But in the case this is an honest assessment, and you truly feel like it will underperform, it's even worse than the former scenario. You're now equating owning Disney to a hobby as hobbies cost you time and money but are expected to bring you joy. I'd much rather spend time and money doing something else than watching the stock chart, like travel with friends and family or nice restaurant(s). The delta of underperformance to the benchmark and then the time involved you spend looking at the chart from 930-4pm on weekdays over something like 20-30 years is significant isn't it?
