I went to accumulate five years out from my expected retirement date longer duration bond fund issues Total Bond Institutional VBTIX and CA long-term tax exempt VCLAX. I did have to stop accumulation of both Total Bond and CA long-term tax exempt when the Fed went back to zero interest rate policy (ZIRP) four months after I was laid off in 2020. When rates were at their lowest in 2021, Total Bond had a net inflow of 41,674,429 new shares in all share classes as everyone seemed to be piling into it.

I did not make new purchases of Vanguard’s CA longs until December of 2023 or make exchanges into Total Bond until June of 2024. I remember how bonds behaved during the 1994 rate hikes and OC bankruptcy, so this was no surprise, and I was not duped into anything I did not understand.
