I have spread my 529 Vanguard college fund across several target enrollment funds and I adjust once a year. I think that this may help in keeping up with inflation in college tuition, instead of investing in a single target enrollment fund that glides into a MM fund in the target year.
I currently own the following:
- Vanguard Interest Portfolio Accumulation fund (this is a MM fund)
- Target Enrollment 2026 / 2027
- Target Enrollment 2028 / 2029
- Target Enrollment 2030 / 2031
My son is the sole beneficiary of my 529. He finished college with $60K remaining, and it has since grown to $65K. He has talked about going back to school for a second degree, but nothing definite yet. He is taking some college classes toward a certificate in game design. I am paying for those classes out of the "Accumulation" fund.
