Decedent died in February without a will. Only heirs are adult son and daughter, who get along and agree on everything. There will be no issues. Took 6 months but estate is finally opened. Decedent had a decent sized brokerage account with assorted securities. I know the heirs get a step up in basis as of date of death. Values have grown since February. If they (or the estate) liquidate the holdings, is the gain since death considered short or long term capital gain?
All inherited property is automatically long-term.
