Personal Finance (Not Investing) • MIL widowed and Medicare questions

Thanks for reply, she is just applying for Medicare, not SS because she has survivor workers comp benefits that will get reduced from state(AK) if she takes a SS payment.

We both signed up for Medicare a year ago, without also applying for SS - but that was because we had already been on SS for quite a few years, which may or may not matter.

We did it all online or perhaps with a phone call, too (?). But we did NOT need to go anywhere.

We had to provide the document from Employer about the soon-to-end health insurance being "creditable", along with a few other routine documents.

We did it on short notice, and we were very worried that it wouldn't be starting "the next month".
However, it was all very fast, but right now, with the gov shutdown, it may take longer.
But the process probably wouldn't change.

It was all much easier and speedier than we had feared.
