Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Is it normal not to know anesthesiology costs before surgery?

If you can find out the company the anesthesiologist works for, you could call their billing department and hopefully get an estimate depending on the time the procedure takes. Anesthesiology groups usually negotiate a rate per unit and each procedure gets an upfront number of units plus 1 unit every 15 minutes the anesthesiologist is taking care of you in the operating room. For example a colonoscopy is 5 units to start plus probably 2-3 units for the 30-45 minutes they take on average but depending on the negotiated rate per unit it could be anywhere from $20 a unit for medicaid to $250 a unit for a cash paying customer. As you can see the system is not exactly transparent or logical.
