We’ve been to both Yellowstone and the Tetons a few times. We find Jackson to be a pretty easy base for exploring the Tetons. Plenty of good and shopping options. We’ve never found the drive to the park a burden from there. Jackson is a kind of a nice mix of town and nature that you’ll leave behind when you head to Yellowstone. We were up in the Tetons in May in 2023. I think the road to Jenny Lake had just opened the day after we arrived. We actually hiked up the road while it was closed.
We like staying at the lodges in Yellowstone. Everything outside the park requires a decent drive hit the main sites. Check the website so you are aware of any road construction projects going on. Try to get through those spots early before the roads get busy if possible.
