I wish the online form was that simple. As far as I can tell you don't get to see where HRB are adding the deduction/expense until you get the pdf at the end. There's no way to directly edit/use Schedule 1 line 16 - you have to work out which part of their form applies the answer to Schedule 1 line 16.Your solo 401k contribution, both employer and employee parts, goes on Schedule 1 line 16. It does not go on Schedule C, the line on Schedule C is used for contributions that you make for any employees you might have, but not yourself.
The HRB email is incorrect that you can deduct your personal 401k contributions directly on Schedule C.
See instructions for Schedule C, line 19:
https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040s ... 29wd0e1604
You are correct that this is because the contribution for yourself is subject to FICA self-employment tax, so it can't be taken as a deduction on Sch C because that would reduce your self-employment income on Sch SE.
I will tell them that they're wrong about Schedule C though and ask them specifically where I can add an answer that will be applied to Schedule 1 line 16.
Thank you
