My husband and I “acquired” a Fidelity Private Client Advisor around 2018 when we were in our late 50s.
We had been buy-and-hold in mutual funds since 1985. We needed and accepted a fresh look at our accounts. Yes, we transitioned to Managed Accounts. We met with our advisor (DC area 1-2x/year). Our meetings were pretty light and general.
My husband died last year and my advisor has been helpful on many levels. I really shouldn’t talk to friends or relatives about my assets — yet I do like to talk through decisions. Just last week, I grabbed an appointment on my advisor’s schedule on a whim to covers some smaller issues. I’m amused when he encourages me to spend more money.
Following my husband’s death, my father also died a year later. The advisor and I have discussed Medicare, Social Security, VA and military benefits, taxes, documenting the valuation of the house for capital gains, etc. It’s been very comprehensive.
For me, the advisor has value — and I appreciate that he keeps me on track. We also talk about which items i need to run past my CPA and my lawyer. He’s been a good part of my team.
