You may have heard of the illiquid form of the TIAA traditional annuity. You can only get money out of it by taking it as an annuity or the Required Minimum Distribution. The annuity can be over your lifetime or beneficiary's lifetime, I think; or, a "payout annuity" of 10 payments over 9 years. You do not get to choose the amounts of the RMDs or the annuity payments. It involves the total amount of that particular annuity under that contract.
