Whether he "can be claimed" as a dependent differs from "is claimed" as a dependent. "Can be claimed" is a matter of law, while "is claimed" is a matter of choice. I don't see anything in the ACA law that allows you to avoid including his earnings if he can be claimed, regardless of whether you claim him or not. Maybe someone else can cite contrary language...?Also, wondering about if it’s better for me to have my son be an independent for tax purposes....
With his low earned income (the scholarship doesn't count as support he provided himself) it seems he can be claimed as your dependent.
I would think you should have a good guess for the 2025 ACA numbers (if you want to predict what you will see when filing in 2026) from when you applied (the SLCSP, the unsubsidized premium, and the APTC that reduces the unsubsidized amount to what you pay out of pocket each month), but I don't know exactly how that works...?Also, I do have that from my 2024 taxes, but those numbers would be really different as plans were cheaper than an income was different.
