My employer offers 2 options and in both cases I'm aiming to max out my contributions. I'm in good health.
Option 1 is $60/yr with no employer contribution, a $3000 deductible, and a $5700 OOP max.
Option 2 is $1100/yr with a $400 employer contribution, a $1500 deductible, and a $3100 OOP max.
The coinsurance amounts and pre-auth requirements for services are close to each other between the 2 so I'm not too concerned about the other intricacies of the plans.
(1) seems nice because it's a much lower premium, but the deductible & OOP amount makes me uncomfortable. This isn't to say spending up to the OOP will leave me in dire straits, but it would just feel irksome to lose that much. On the other hand, I do like that I can max out my deductions through the HSA this way.
(2) seems nice because of the employer contribution and the lower limits for coverage to start. However, I feel like if I choose this option, it would be over $1k lost to premiums that don't get invested. Also, I'd miss out on a $400 deduction that I could take out by just making the contributions myself.
