I'm opening my first solo 401k this year and plan to use a free prototype plan from one of the major brokerages (Fidelity, Schwab, or E*TRADE). I want the option to rollover an old pre-tax 401k and convert some of those funds to Roth status in the next few years, either via in-plan Roth conversions or rollovers to a Roth IRA. I understand these plans don’t support the mega-backdoor Roth strategy.
Which free prototype solo 401k plans currently allow converting pre-tax rollovers or employee/employer contributions to Roth, either within the plan or by rolling over to a Roth IRA? E*TRADE appears to allow this, but Fidelity and Schwab may not, as their Roth options are relatively new.
For those who have done Roth conversions with these plans, how straightforward was the process? Did anyone experience any issues with receiving or reporting Form 1099-R after the conversion?
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights and experiences!
