About a year ago Amex ran a special for discounted Apple gift cards. I cashed in a bunch of points for cards I immediately applied against a purchase of a new Mac. Even with the discount I'd bet it wasn't the best possible value for those points, but it was great for me for cutting the price of a needed new Mac by 50%.
