Welcome to the forum.
Is this real or have IBKR made a mistake? Should I attempt a purchase of e.g. VOO, or will this land me in PFIC trouble?
It might be related to a recent UK regulatory change, although if it is I'm surprised that IBKR has been able to unpick this so quickly. Or, it might be an IBKR mistake. Or something else. Are IBKR fully aware that you're a UK resident?

Either way, using VOO specifically will not land you in any PFIC or other unpalatable tax trouble. It's US domiciled, so it is not a PFIC, and it has UK reporting status.
