A dead battery is not the only possible failure mode. The display on my phone abruptly quit working. Phone still seemed to work as it would ring for incoming calls and vibrate on some actions. could not revive the display. Useless without the display.
If you have no backup system, you could wind up in a bad predicament.
Relying on a phone introduces potential failures and data gathering. I'm sticking with a physical card.
