Personal Consumer Issues • European luxury cars: do you purchase an OEM extended warranty? If so, has it paid for itself?

I agree that Audi reliability is hit or miss. Personally I would never own one. They are poorly engineered because Volkswagen tried to share too many parts with VW models and other brands in the portfolio and had to make compromises to the vehicle to accommodate their parts bin. The Audis are extremely time consuming to repair when they break, and VW overcharges for parts.
It's the opposite. VW engineering is somewhat decent. However, platform sharing (they're not drawing from a common parts bin - they're taking the same vehicle and slapping on a different badge) means that any one engineering or design mistake drags everything down. E.g., the early versions of the i4 EA888 or the more recent infotainment system issues.

Where the vehicle is manufactured also matters.
BMW is on a completely different level both in terms of reliability and in terms of ease of repair, YouTube and online videos if you want to learn how to do the repair yourself, part pricing and parts availability. VW is notorious for discontinuing some parts for cars older than 10 years old. I never had any trouble getting parts on my 98 BMW M3 or my 2002 M5. How many 98 Audis or 2002 Audis are still running?

People latch onto stereotypes about Asian brands being more reliable etc. That was the case for a long time. But since BMW started using the b58 inline 6 and b48 inline 4, they’ve shot up the ranks for reliability and have outclassed many Asian brands. You’ll have a lot more reliability issues with a modern Honda than a modern BMW. Go ask the Honda/Acura owners with the 1.5 engine about oil dilution or 2018+ honda/acura owners about their transmission issues.
From what I've read, the issues with the 1.5 engines were fixed years ago. Don't know anything about the transmission issues, except that it's yet another reason to stay away from CVTs (making an assumption here...).
