thanks for the update!I am pleased to report back positive news!
Last night, I did a one-lot SpecID sale on the same holdings overriding my MinTax default. It went through correctly exactly as I specified with no drama. Yeah! The lot I sold was from 2008, and although it is non-covered, it had detailed information.
I have a few theories about what happened before, and I will update my previous posts to point here.
Situation: I did a transfer out to a charity overriding MinTax with SpecID. This transfer involved multiple non-covered lots, including some extremely old ones (pre 2005) that didn't even have a date included on lot details. The transfer initially took the shares as MinTax, and a case was opened for a human to fix it up, which took about a week.
Somewhere around 2005, lots started having detailed information. They were preparing for the switch to covered shares. If you have holdings before 2005, they just bunch them into one lot that has no details, not even a date. The basis listed looks like a guess. I have detailed records for these including the correct basis.
My theory in order of why I think this happened
1) Really old lots may need manual intervention. These would be pre-2005 and are listed in aggregate on your account with no date.
2) Perhaps a transfer is different than a sale
3) My transfer included many different scattered lots, perhaps this caused a kick-out
4) Covered shares are likely no problem
My advice is still to give it some time if you override with SpecID, just in case.
