This so-called rule is not actually a rule meant to be followed. It is an example of the "door-in-the-face" technique. By presenting an unreasonably large request first, the marketer conditions you to agree to a subsequent smaller request that, while still unreasonable, seems reasonable by comparison. The marketer does not really expect people to agree to the initial large request, but if that does happen, of course, it's a bonus for them.
Even a 2 carat diamond is pushing the boundaries of "simple," in the sense that, if someone wearing a 2 ct ring said "we're simple people," I would laugh at that. I bet you would too. That said, perhaps she doesn't actually view herself as "simple people." You know her best.
