Personal Investments • First TIPS purchase question

I didn't read the other replies in detail, so I apologize if any of this is repeating what others have already told you...

When the market is open, I would suggest that you either check the box for "show best quote only" or enter the desired quantity (but don't do both). Also check the box to show only TIPS.

With best quote only, you will see one line for each TIPS. Additional (worse) quotes will be shown by clicking on the depth of book on the right side of your screen. You only need to look there if your quantity is less than the min shown for the best quote.

If you, instead, have entered the desired quantity, you will see only quotes where the min is less than your quantity. Sort by clicking on the YTM column to find the lowest price/highest yield. (The reason to not do "best quotes" along with a quantity is because then Schwab will show no quotes unless the best one has a min. less than your desired quantity.)

As noted, there is only one TIPS issue for Jan. 2030, the next closest are Oct. 2029 or April 2030. You can see a list of all TIPS with quotes from Friday here: https://www.wsj.com/market-data/bonds/tips

I'd ignore the differences in yield between April (or October or July) and January, these differences are due to seasonality of inflation. It's safe to just assume the market is efficient and buy the issue that matures when you want it to, or the one with lower or higher coupon if that's a preference.

With price around 95 and current principal of about 1265, the cost of each Jan 2030 will be around $1200, so to invest $50K you would want 41 or 42 bonds. Or for $50K in current principal, so that you get an inflation adjusted $50K at maturity, you would want 39 or 40 bonds. It sounds like you want the latter, but there's not a big difference.

The Jan 2030 has a minimal coupon of 0.125%, so there won't be much cash to reinvest (or use) along the way, only about $62 or so per year.
