Personal Consumer Issues • Diamond ring purchasing - have the rules changed?

I believe some jewelers will provide you with a "proposal" ring that is fully returnable - and then you and your fiancee go to the jeweler and have the fun of finding the stones and designing the engagement ring together.
I assume that the proposal ring is bigger and brighter to impress social media,
and the actual engagement ring is more real.

Probably not bigger. But if a person wants to surprise someone with a proposal and wants to have a ring at the moment, it can be very hard to guess what kind of ring the proposee might like. And who wants to be stuck with a mistake on something like that!

To have something fully returnable is a great idea, and a blessing to all concerned.

(Full disclosure and I said above, I was not a fan of the setting of the ring my husband surprised me with. Loved the stone, not the setting. Not the end of the world but I had specific likes with jewelry which he did not know could matter to me for something I would be wearing every day.)

Proposers - keep your options open ring-purchase-wise so if there is some disappointment, you know it can be easily dealt with.

And those "try 'em all" kits - what an amazing idea!

Did the OP ever check back in after getting all this good advice?

I looked but did not see him!
