Thanks much for your insightful and explanatory responses. I’m thinking this through a bit more.

Now retired, but when I was working and saving, taxes were a lot more straightforward. Not a lot of options given my situation then. I was probably lulled into a sense of “obliviousness”.

Retirement has illuminated a much more nuanced path for taxes. There seem to be many more levers to adjust and optimize taxes. Learning them all is a real task. I’ve been prowling the BH site for years, only recently posting, learning all the time.

Anyone know of a good “checklist” for taxes? I’ve searched the BH forum, the BH wiki and other sites. Many are good but looking for a way to organize this complicated tax system in my head. Ultimately I want to get myself to a position of knowing what to do in most (likely) situations.
