We sold our larger home in the NE when the price appreciation was still 'manageable'. Reduced our real estate 'footprint' in the NE and established our domicile in Florida at that time. Now we have again begun to build up the home appreciation in the Florida home.We rented monthly for a couple years but ultimately bought a condo in Florida near one of our kids. we kept our house up north. We are currently weighing the pros and cons of changing our domicile to Florida. If Florida eliminates property tax as is being proposed, it may tip the scale.
One huge holdup or source of confusion is our northern home. It has significant price appreciation and changing our domicile to Florida would eliminate the tax break on appreciation should we sell it. I don’t know a way around this but those taxes would equal over ten years of Florida income tax savings.
