Converting a fixed number of shares earlier in the year will usually cost you less than converting later in the year since share prices tend to increase over time.Roth conversions cause tax to be paid earlier than it would otherwise need to be paid. Paying an expense earlier than necessary is, in practical terms, never a good thing.
One exception is a sudden drop in the markets overall. That's when I would take advantage of the drop in share price and convert again!
