I’ve left several jobs, in a few cases where the employers were probably somewhat surprised.
My rule has been to imagine myself as the person / institution on the other side of the conversation. What would I reasonably think is ethical and proper behavior on the part of the employee?
Then, I try to behave in accord with those ethical expectations as the employee.
What goes around comes around, and I don’t want a guilty conscience from pursuing short term gains for myself at the cost of leaving a justified negative impression with former colleagues.
Note that this hasn’t prevented me from doing things that surprised former employers, or that they weren’t happy with. But I think it has helped me stay on good terms with communities I still value.
