Congrats on your savings to date.
Do you have a job in CA now? Do you have health insurance now?
If not I’d likely try it out if it won’t affect your health adversely. You can always resign if its not the job you think it is.
If you have to maintain CA residency for your daughter’s college I don’t see how that is possible unless you wife can take that role. I’d sort that out first.
I’d try to bargain a relo package.
I will be surprised if you are not frustrated in the new gov job. Do gov Software employees write software and do substantial SW projects or do they manage SW contractors working for the gov? My experience in the DoD and defense industry dealing with SW projects was the gov did not have the depth or IP to maintain any expertise in software programs for large defense systems so they paid industry for the capability to maintain it. Hopefully it’s different for this position with fdic but clearly the gov will move slow compared to industry.
Since your wife will still be on west coast you can always move back if a better job is found.
