I like to compartmentalize and have a separate portfolio for each goal. I have a portfolio solely for retirement, an emergency fund, and 529. If I have an investment goal it's another portfolio with its own allocation. Things that are within 5 years are in cash.
Other members have do things differently and prefer to have one portfolio and allocate buckets in the portfolio, but everyone ultimately have one portfolio but this is just my way of looking at it.
