The route my wife and I both went is with a 4-wheeled carryon, and a backpack with a built-in handle loop. So I have the option (which I usually take) of putting the backpack on top of the case and just wheeling them through the airport like one tall bag.Since I'll already need a backpack (that has a good laptop sleeve) that can fit underneath the seat, the second bag would need to be either a wheeled bag (NOT necessarily 4 wheel spinner with all that wasted space) or some type of duffel with a darn good comfortable strap that won't hurt me while also wearing a backpack.
This method would not work with the LL Bean bag you linked, as it does not have enough structure to stand upright with another bag stacked on top.
