Personal Consumer Issues • New Electric Panel? What Manufacturer for a 200 amp panel.

For those mentioning the SPAN panel: while I agree it’d be super cool to have per-circuit monitoring and control, I predict a longer-term reliability nightmare. In their design, each of the 32 spaces has a relay integrated into the panel. The 32 relays are not user-replaceable, either by a homeowner or even by an electrician! Even if they were replaceable, it sounds like they are physically behind the bus bars.

Relays will start dying from either cycle age or time age (corrosion, fused contacts, coil failure, etc). And you’ve got 32 of them! It may take a while since people aren’t switching these frequently, but I predict we will see people with 10-20 year old panels that have dead spaces.

Maybe I’m biased because I’ve seen a bunch of home appliance relay failures. Two in the past two years (boiler, failed open; dehumidifier, failed closed). But that’s why the relays should be socketed and replaceable.

(And that’s before their $200M+ of VC funding catches up and they have to start charging $10/month to use your electrical panel.)
