Personal Consumer Issues • Cheap & reliable 6 passenger vehicle

On one hand a used older buick lucerne would be around $7-$8k but I worry with having to take time in the shop and miss work/picking up kids.

I'd go for an old Sienna/Odyssey long before I tried to cram 6 people into an old buick/crown vic. Slightly higher price, slightly less chance of shop time, much better experience. FWIW I drive a 2008 Sienna I bought 5 years ago for $3900.
