I've brought this up several times in different threads. I plan to set up automatic withdrawals in my Fidelity accounts, which will contain only mutual funds for this reason. Fidelity will do this for ANY mutual fund, while Vanguard will do it for Vanguard mutual funds only. One thing I have not seen mentioned yet is that if one wants to utilize an automatic RMD service in retirement, at least now, none of the majors will do it with ETFs, only mutual funds. There is typically an exception for a managed account, however.
So if one wants to set up a set it and forget it approach here for themselves or perhaps a disinterested spouse, mutual funds are likely a better choice.
Now, since this will be in a tax deferred account, and RMDs seem to be getting pushed out later and later, a conversion to mutual funds could happen later on if desired.
