I have not had to use the Merrill customer service much. I believe it is fine. They don't offer online chat customer service, unlike Fidelity. However, even at Fidelity, some requests require phone calls anyway - recently, I wanted to change my debit card limits, and it took some time to get it done, and multiple calls, since they didn't change my husband's card limits despite it being mentioned the first time. Fidelity partners with banks, while Merrill is a subsidiary of BofA. I have had varied experienced with BofA customer service, overall, not as good as Fidelity. But they do have branches, allow cash deposits, cashier checks, etc, which you cannot get at Fidelity. I use BofA/Merrill mainly for the credit cards, not for the checking account that is mandatory to keep for status. How easy, convenient and customer service is at Merrill compared to Fidelity? I have all assets at Fidelity and use a Fidelity 2% credit card, but I am thinking of moving $100k in assets to Merril just for higher credit card cash back. Before doing this - I am doing my research to see if it is worth the hassle.
