1) Never go behind your boss' back.Hello all,
I'm an engineer working in a MegaCorp that I joined in April 2023.
My boss, who hired me, has turned out to be someone who is very incompetent making work very stressful. Examples:
- She flip flops on her decisions all the time; very confusing for everybody
- She routinely blows off meetings with me and other people
- Does no planning at all, projects are chaotic and stressful
- Clearly doesn't plan ahead, requests big tasks done last minute
My boss's boss (call her M) is having a strategic review in a couple of weeks.
- (Not with me) Has offended many people with curt style
My best friend (who is a manager in our department, worked with him at 3 companies since 2007) has suggested to talk to M about it, she is very open about feedback etc.
In my 20+ years in my career, I've never gone over my boss's head to complain about them before. My MO has been to be low maintenance and keep my head down.
Is it a good idea to schedule a call with M?
If I do, I was thinking topics could be that (1) (Keep it positive) I'd like to change groups so I can do other things I find interesting and or (2) (Critical) tell her my relationship is very difficult with my boss and want to make a change(?)
Thanks ahead of time for any thoughts or similar experiences. I'm on the verge of burning out, losing sleep. We're a one income household with little kids and feel like I'm trapped.
2) Never discuss "hearsay". If you don't see it or hear it yourself, it's not your business.
3) Be honest and don't hold back. If you are asked specifically about your manager, then give your feedback with full transparency. If you are asked specifically about the projects, then give your feedback on the projects without focusing on any particular individual.
