Personal Finance (Not Investing) • At what net worth or income should one feel comfortable flying business or first class?

I fly internationally for work several times a year. The company policy is business for overseas and economy for domestic/close international (i.e. Canada/Mexico). I'm very glad they do, as I do pretty tough/long flights (such as back to back overnights) where business makes a huge difference. At the same time, I have never paid out of pocket for international business myself.

The problem is that unless you are committed to a specific destination, the cost of business class easily exceeds the cost of the rest of the vacation. For vacation, I would ratjet go somewhere close where I don't need an 8+ hour flight. Spending even half of what overseas business class tickets would cost will pay for 5 star accommodations for the duration of a week long trip.

Domestic first I view as more of a frequent flyer perk. I get upgraded about 1/3 of the time, but it's not something I'd spend my own money on. I'm an average size person. I'm reasonably comfortable in an economy seat as long as I don't expect to sleep (I have never actually slept any amount of time in an economy seat).
