I have recently gone through this analysis with my rising hs senior and decided against spending money and time on paid prep.
Google “common data set [institution name]” for the 2023-2024 cycle and you can get the most accurate average score and percentage of students who submitted scores last time.
The schools that are going back to requiring test scores are mostly highly selective. My kid has an unweighted 4.0 with 9 AP classes and decent extracurricular involvement (varsity sport, editor in chief of newspaper, volunteering). Yet, I don’t think she is a realistic contender at the 30 or so most selective institutions.
A little lower in the prestige pole, she is a contender but the average score at our target schools is much higher than her 1310. These schools are very much test optional. So, the choice is fairly easy.
You can do okay with the Kahn academy free modules and some papers books and YouTube videos.
My daughter did repeat the test 3x so that she could get the minimum score for auto admission at our public university’s honors college, in case she changes her mind and wants to go the route. Now, we will stop worrying about it.
Getting more than 300 points above an initial test score, even with tutoring, would be quite an accomplishment. Arborbridge has an online tool that lets you consider improvement statistics in exchange for enormous fees.
