My bank encodes the check number into the line item information on my statement.There won't be a check number on the statement. IRS does not cash the check. They just use the routing and account numbers on the check to initiate an ACH transfer.Have you considered taking a photo/scan of the check before mailing it? Then you can match up with the check number on your statement later.
