Yep I considered it a win when I got my two Mitsubishi systems installed for only 2.2-2.5x the cost of the equipment to me online. I was sorely tempted to do the installs myself but decided just to bite the bullet and pay somebody. That is a typical mark-up for residential HVAC in the United States.Wow, I know one can get ripped off by contractors but ... Jeez, $20K to install a 3-head system that has $5K worth of parts, half a day labor? That's just insane. We just bought a 1200sf house with obsolete wall heater, and plan to install a 4-zone Mitsubishi sometime before Christmas. Also need to run 220V to plug it in, so .. all takes time. We will get a couple quotes, but I already feel ripped off. Federal rebates look solid.
Browsing online shows there are companies and vendors that cater to DIY. I'd love to be install the head and maybe tubing ourselves (we can totally mount a box, drill holes, run tubing to outside, even frame attic for an in-ceiling unit) but I hear you really need a pro to seal and pressure fill the coolant lines. Sigh.
