That means you have Excellent Taste!!!Donald Roeser is one of my favorite guitarists.I think I have ALL their recorded music.I have a confession: I have never heard Godzilla! I had to wiki Blue Oyster Cult to see what songs they had : the Reaper and I’m Burnin. I never bought any of their albums. I don’t know why. Funny! Another group I didn’t know well was Pink Floyd or Prince.
The first time I saw them was them opening for Alice Cooper at WPI, Worcester, MA, January 1972.
I was the manager of a rock band at the time and I went with several other members of the band. Almost the entire band. We were all huge Alice Cooper fans with the band doing some of their songs. All we wanted to do was see Alice Cooper. We did not want to see this Blue Oyster Cult band we'd never heard of. After they played one of the vocalists and I looked at one another and said ..."They had to have really good to have held our attention so well when initially all we wanted was to see Alice Cooper".
Later I bought their first record and the band ended up doing a few of their songs.
Decades later I read in a book about Blue Oyster Cult that that was THE key show for them. It was the first time they'd played with Alice Cooper. Alice was so impressed with their performance that they were kept on for the rest of the tour.
Buck Dharma, their lead guitarist is one of THE most underrated guitarists of all time.
I don't know who here has ever heard of or heard The Good Rats? An early 70s band.
I saw them months after I'd seen Blue Oyster Cult. I was impressed with the guitarist. I went to him after they finished playing to compliment him. I thought he'd be complimented by being compared to Buck Charma / Donald Roeser.
This is how the conversation went:
Me: You know the Blue Oyster Cult?
Him: You are not comparing me to their guitarist, are you???!!!
I was shocked that he was taking that not as a compliment but as criticism!
