Did someone recognize a pattern that wasn't really there, give it a name, and invent a style of investing?Factors can't actually die because a subset of the mean will always behave differently than the mean when it was selected for different behavior. Their existence doesn't necessarily mean they will provide you with anything.
But there are patterns that seem to persist, or recur, enough to be interesting. No one knows whether they will pay off in real world investing in the future.
