Belated thanks to all those who responded. Fidelity youth account did the trick -- but with the tax flowing through the child's SSN.
As someone had mentioned it does have the advantage of some standard deduction (about $1100 or so), but with some added paperwork.
I'd wanted to avoid holding any substantial position or filing taxes in his name if I could help it to avoid FAFSA complication. But I was able to find a work around that suited my requirements. Not sure I could discuss it here.
