Huh, this brought back memories. As a child, I remember my mom showing me a gold coin and some silver coins that they were keeping on my behalf in their safe. I think one was a silver dollar, but I'd never thought back to how much they must be worth. At the time, I certainly thought of it as a fancy dollar coin and never revisited the memory. Here's a real example. My kids both inherited coins from my dad when he passed. Eventually, I confiscated them from both of them. Why? They were spending them at face value on valuable things like cheetos and Red Bulls. With a silver bar, I'd expect they would bring them to a scrap yard looking to scrap these bars of lead. Heck, they'll walk away with $8 for each bar.Thank you for all the responses. I laughed out loud, when reading how silver is no good for kids as a gift to inherit, and i understand this. I can sell these Silver bars in a few years, and forget giving them to my kids. I just loved how they looked (I tried to post a picture here), and I felt rich when purchasing the bars And, I do own VTI, VNQ, and VBR!
In any case case, I've never had reason to think about it. As a young adult, my parents went on vacation and returned to find their house burgled. The burglars didn't empty out the safe but rather just hauled away the whole thing.
