I want a second opinion from outside the network. Unless the x-rays are faulty somehow, I don't see any value in re-doing. I'd prefer the second doctor not be able to see the first's opinion, in order to form an independent opinion.I can interpret your sentence in two ways, which might affect the answer you want:I would like to get a second opinion on an x-ray from outside of my provider's network.
You want a reading for an xray taken outside the network
--or--
You want a second opinion from outside your network
--or--
(both)
As long as you will be doing this, it might be about the same cost to go to an outside specialist and have the xray re-taken and read again. That would make a stronger case either way compared to what you were told the first time and you might learn other things along the way about your care (treatment options, history of the body area, slightly different angle seen...)
Unless you are in an HMO, you can call your insurance to see if they cover a second opinion and if there are any restrictions. This should at least bring down the cost to how much the insurance would have paid, even if they don't cover a second opinion.
The cost of the procedure was $7,705. That was for 5 minutes on the table, two x-rays by the technician, and interpretation by the radiologist. No cost after insurance. I wouldn't think that I can get all that done again for zero out of network, and due to the interpretation, it wouldn't be in the insurer's best interest to allow a second opinion.
