As my net worth gets closer to the point where I could retire early, I'll need to add bonds to my taxable account.

If you need to add bonds to your portfolio to reduce volatility and other risks, the use of leverage in funds like NTSX defeat that objective.

NTSX has been more volatile and had larger drawdowns than the S&P500 while also underperforming the S&P500. Incorporating treasury futures in a levered portfolio does not provide access to treasury liquidity at times of financial duress. Holding treasuries accomplishes that.
In its limited lifetime, yes. But it's a simple static strategy which can reasonably be backtested and this is not true for a longer backtest.
