Those website repair estimates are sort of like Zillow on home value estimates, sometimes accurate, sometimes way off. One problem is there can be highly specific engine differences in the same model of car that can dramatically change the cost of replacement. If OP's Taurus has the Ford 3.5L V6 it has an internal the engine water pump in front wheel drive configurations (such as the Taurus). The pump is actually behind the timing cover and is driven off the camshaft chains. Ford did this because else the engine couldn't be used in front wheel drive configurations due to size. So it is going to be a lot more expensive to replace than an typical external water pump that would be found on the four cylinder that was also available that year. And that is before the possibility the water pump failure did further damage (it is possible for example that coolant got in the oil before it failed catastrophically). You may want to try a different mechanic. Per KBB, a water pump replacement is in the neighborhood of $800 to $1k.Without warranty, my mechanic quoted me 2-4k to fix the car, however, it exceeds the value of the car at this point.

All that said OP should get more estimates and a range of $2-4k is silly (though I expect if he does have a 3.5l that is probably what it is going to cost).
