Have done #1 with our 2 drivers once buying used for us and another time new. Plan to do the same with 3rd kid. But our 2 hand me downs were a Camry with 235k miles and odyssey with 256k miles so was the obvious choice. When the Camry died, they got a used leaf which became my car when they bought their own and odyssey was handed to the next kid. When the odyssey died, that kid got a used Toyota with about 90k miles on it. (Pure short range EV wasn’t going to work for them at college).
We live in the west where things are spread out. The hassle of sharing a car or riding a bus would not have been worth it to us.
