I did something similar. Gifted Honda Civic to my D, around the time she graduated college. The college, and home, was in Missouri, she was moving to California. We did the transfer in Missouri, got her her own title in Missouri, then she and I drove it to California, and she changed the registration to Cali. In that case, it was a gift, not a sale, and all the registration costs were fairly small (she didn't have to pay sales tax anywhere, though Cali registration is at least a somewhat significant cost.)
You probably need to read the rules in both states.
Be aware that a '16 CR-V is likely worth significantly more than $9K.
Enjoy the drive. For your route, a swing through southern Utah (Bryce, Zion), may be a little out of the way, but they're neat. Also maybe Vail or one of the pretty towns near your route in Colorado. You might still be in season for white water rafting. Eastern Colorado/Wyoming & Iowa/northern Missouri are kinda dull.
