Personal Consumer Issues • Hotel recommendation (or at least what area) in DC

I would *not* recommend that tourists take the Metro green line south of NAVY YARD station (one station beyond WATERFRONT) for any reason, as street smarts are essential in the areas served. There are little/no tourist attractions here (except for biking along the beautiful Anacostia River trail---in daylight only). Ditto for Orange/Blue/Silver lines west east of Eastern Market and a few spots on the western section of the red line. Even in the "touristy" areas like Chinatown and swanky parts of Northwest, you want to be self-aware at all times. Occasional random street crime does happen here. Beware of remarkably bad driving when walking across the street and be alert as you would in any major city.

So we're also planning a DC trip in a few weeks.
Staying at Hilton Lefant Plaza, near the Mall.
Was planning on silver line to/from IAD, and also to/from Georgetown.
Not safe?
Can Uber of course, but wouldn't mind saving a few $ 😎

You'll be fine during the day. The area around L'Enfant plaza is kind of deserted at night. Wouldn't be my first pick. Geography in the quoted post is a little off.
