Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Thoughts on earning associates degree in high school/career paths

As others have mentioned, I would ignore the Associates designation. Rather, focus on the overall education progression. Is the accelerated timeframe right for the student.

When I was in high school 20 some years ago, we had the mix of dual enrollment and AP classes. I also took classes on my own at a local community college in the evening during my senior year. That was a real eye opener and maybe worth something on its own. When I started college, I was designated a sophomore. The early credits allowed me to take only 12 hours per semester and basically work full time while in college and still graduate early. There were times I hated having to go to night classes, and my dual enrollment classes resulted in me taking placement exams that discouraged me from taking college classes (oh, so I tested into German 4 and I don't need additional foreign language credits, no thanks). End result was definitely cheaper and facilitated a different life than going in with no or minimal credits. Lots of positives, some negatives.
Good points.
Well said.

Yes. Keep a comprehensive picture and long term strategy in mind.
Early exposure not only to a University campus and courses, but the "feel" of the classes, as early as possible, even if only 1 course at night or summers, etc, as you say, can be a real eye opener and "reality check".

for example: I greatly looked forward to going to the University. When I got there, at least for me, when in class and going through a course, I felt like my peers were in 2nd grade. In the "old days", comprehensive guidance was often very poor and uninformed, in high schools and universities. Now, it is much better and one should take advantage of all of it.

Great input.
Thanks.
