I share your views in that I am not a "country fan" or an "R&B" fan or a "Rock" Fan. What I think I am is a "good song" fan.Much the same for me, except I'm also much more open to what is obviously country music — just not really *commercial* country music — than I ever used to be. Check out the two links novicemoney posted. Some of his stuff is very bluesy, some more traditional but tasteful country. He's a gifted songwriter.I too like some country music, mainly the classics like Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson. I don’t like the popular stuff of today though I haven’t listened to the artist in this thread yet. I like alt-country such as what Lucinda Williams plays. As it turns out, I love country music!
I think I like the old-style country swing music too but I haven’t listened to it in a long time.
Very interesting interview from just last year on The Daily Show:

As for country(or alt country or roots music) whatever you want to call it, there is just some stellar stuff, but like all genre's you have to look for it. Here are some selections that have a place in my heart and I am hoping it will be for you too. These are duets ( a country specialty).
Emmylou Harris and Ricky Skaggs, " Darkest Hour Is Just Before the Dawn" In the bluegrass ballad style. It has what Bill Monroe called the "High Lonesome Sound":

The late great Kris Kristoferson and Patty Loveless cover of the the Carter Family song "Far Side Banks of Jordan". Sorry this one is sentimental, when I first heard this version my Dad had just passed, so it got me thinking about him.:

"The Streets of Bakersfield" Dwight Yoakum and Buck Owens. This one's got a crazy cajun accordion riff:

"You and Tequila", Kenny Chesney and Canadian rocker Grace Potter. More contemporary but outstanding in my mind:

Sorry about the length of the post, but I hope you enjoy some of the songs.
