Personal Consumer Issues • Is Calif Really That Expensive - Or Am I Missing Something?

There are some things that make California worth it to people who can afford it. First and foremost is the climate, which is difficult to put a price on. Mild winters and low-humidity summers. Second for me is the desire to live in a diverse and cosmopolitan area. And living here need not be all that expensive. I pay less than $1500 a month in rent, $8 a month for gas power, $85 a month for electric power, $115 a month for auto/renter/umbrella insurance, and $0 for gasoline (we're happy with our EV). My effective state income tax rate was 7.2% last year - substantial but doable. If I lived in Nevada, I'd have a much nicer car and house, but I'm happy with the tradeoffs for now. And my salary is locality-adjusted.
